DOGWOOD * CORNUS
- Deciduous whorled trees.
- The dogwoods are hardy ornamentals, often assuming a brilliant
fall coloring, and with attractive flowers and fruits. They grow
nearly as well in shady places. Hardy as far north as Massachusetts.
- Well adapted for sandy soils.
- C. alternifolia is of very distinct habit, the branches being
arranged in irregular whorls, forming flat,horizontally spreading
tiers. It is deciduous.
- Small tree, grows to 25 ft.
- C. rubra rarely grows to 40 ft.
- One of the most beautiful American flowering trees.
