LILY-OF-THE-VALLEY TREE
- A South American native, this tree needs
regular water and even thrives in wet spots. Sometimes called
flowering oak, in the summer it bears hundreds of white, bell-shaped
flowers almost an inch long. Red and cream seed pods are attractive,
but can be messy. Hardy to 16 degrees.
- Stake and prune when young; tends to send out many low and
crossing and competing branches in the tree's center.
- Height to 25 feet.
- Another "Lily-of-the-Valley" tree, Clethra arborea,
is more easily damaged by frost and prefers acid soils. Evergreen
glossy leaves and fragrant flowers in late summer. Upright growth
to 20 feet.
