PINE * PINUS
- Ornamental, pine trees are grown for their
evergreen foliage and symmetrical or picturesque habit. Many
species are valuable timber trees.
- Resinous, evergreen with usually whorled branches. Usually
tall trees with spreading branches.
- Pines are not very particular as to the soil. In their native
habitats they usually occupy the less fertile situations, as
dry uplands and sandy plains. Some can be grown in both dry and
in swampy ground.
- Most varieties grow to 100 ft.
- Some varieties of pines are used for the afforestation of
barren sandy plains and dry rocky mountainsin slopes. Other species
are used for seaside plantings.
- Most species are of vigorous growth when young, but the foreign
species usually grow rather slowly and therefore well suited
for smaller gardens.
