WESTERN CATALPA * Catalpa speciosa
- Native to the United States from southern
Illinois to Arkansas, the Western Catalpa has flowers similar
to the Southern Catalpa. The trumpet-shaped, white flowers with
yellow stripes and brown and purple spots are borne in loose
clusters about 7 inches long; not quite as showy as the Southern
Catalpa. Long, brown, bean-like pods hang after bloom; creates
litter.
- Not fussy as to soil type; requires moderate irrigation to
perform its best. Prune and shape when young. Protect from high
winds; branches somewhat brittle.
- Height to 50-60 feet.
