WHITE MULBERRY * Morus Alba
- This Asian native is deciduous, with broadly
oval leaves 3-5 inches long. In its native habitat, it is cultivated
for it leaves for use as food for silkworms. The sweet fruit
is usually white, though sometimes pink, and is 1 3/4 inches
long.
- 'Pendula' or 'Teas Weeping' are weeping varieties that stay
compact.
- Fruitless varieties have been developed, but have been banned
in some Southwestern communities because of the heavy pollen
they produce. Nonetheless, they are well adapted to desert temperature
extremes, poor soils and drought, growing quickly and producing
deep shade. Drought tolerant once established. Roots can be shallow
and invasive.
